OpenAI, AMD Announce Massive Computing Deal, Marking New Phase of AI Boom

The "massive computing deal" is a strategic, multi-year partnership between OpenAI and AMD for the supply of high-performance AI chips and infrastructure.

Key details of the agreement include:

 * Chip Deployment: OpenAI commits to deploying 6 gigawatts (GW) of AMD GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) across multiple generations for its next-generation AI infrastructure.

 * Initial Phase: The initial deployment of 1 GW will use AMD's upcoming Instinct MI450 Series GPUs and is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026.

 * Strategic Alignment: The deal is expected to deliver tens of billions of dollars in revenue for AMD and positions them as a core strategic compute partner for OpenAI.

 * OpenAI Stake in AMD: As part of the agreement, AMD issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock (approximately 10% of the company), which will vest as specific deployment and financial milestones are achieved.

 * Market Impact: The deal is seen as a significant move that challenges the dominance of Nvidia in the AI hardware market and helps OpenAI diversify its supply chain for the massive compute power required for advanc

ed AI.
