UN Security Council to vote on Trump peace plan for Gaza

 The UN Security Council was scheduled to vote on Monday, November 17, 2025, on a U.S.-drafted resolution endorsing President Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza and authorizing an International Stabilization Force (ISF).

The vote is a key step in providing international legitimacy for the plan, which follows a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

Key Aspects of the Draft Resolution and Trump's Plan:

 * Endorses Trump's 20-point Peace Plan: The plan focuses on security, reconstruction, transitional political/administrative arrangements, and regional cooperation.

 * International Stabilization Force (ISF): The resolution authorizes the establishment and deployment of a temporary ISF, with a mandate potentially running until the end of 2027. This force is intended to:

   * Monitor the ceasefire.

   * Secure border areas.

   * Protect civilians and humanitarian corridors.

   * Oversee the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, including the decommissioning of weapons from non-state armed groups.

 * Transitional Governance: It "welcomes the establishment of the Board of Peace (BoP)," a transitional governing body for Gaza, which President Trump would theoretically chair until the end of 2027.

 * Palestinian Statehood: Unlike earlier versions, the draft text now includes a reference to a possible future Palestinian state, stating that after reforms and reconstruction, "the conditions may finally be in place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood." This was added due to pressure from Arab states.

 * Support and Opposition:

   * The resolution has gained joint support from several key Arab and Muslim-majority nations, including Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Jordan, Indonesia, and Pakistan.

   * It has faced criticism from some far-right ministers in the Israeli government and certain Palestinian factions.

   * Russia circulated a rival proposal that questions the role of the transitional authority.

This vote is seen as vital to reassure countries considering contributing troops to the ISF by giving the mission a formal UN mandate.
